The Mater Hospital

Birthing Suite

If you decide on a vaginal delivery, the newly renovated, private birthing suites at the Mater are fully equipped with state of the art facilities, designed with your comfort in mind. With an integrated approach to you and your baby’s care, the Central Fetal Monitoring System (CFMS) monitors your baby’s heartbeat and relays vital information during your labour, allowing me to respond quickly to any changes if needed. The suites are spacious and come with an ensuite, TV, speakers for connecting to an Apple device, as well as recliner lounge chairs for you and your partner.

The Mater also has a dedicated obstetric operating theatre should you choose or require a caesarean section. The purpose-built recovery bays allow your family to visit in comfort and privacy as soon as you are out of the theatre. Importantly, you are able to be with your baby immediately following the surgery.

    Special Care Nursery

The Special Care Nursery is a secure unit and visitors are strictly limited to ensure a safe and comfortable environment is maintained. It has a Neonatologist and specially trained nurses on hand at all times of the day or night, ensuring round the clock care for your baby.

    Postnatal Care

Following birth, you will be moved to your own private room to recover and spend time with your baby as well as enjoying visits from family and friends. This is an important time for bonding with your baby and the Mater Hospital provides the amenities for you, your family and your friends, to do so in spacious, comfortable surrounds. The rooms are designed for your partner to stay overnight free of charge and include:

    • Private ensuite bathroom
    • A lounge chair that turns into a bed for your partner
    • Complimentary Wi-Fi
    • TV with Foxtel and a dedicated 24-hour maternity education channel
    • Bar fridge
    • Radio and phone
    • Lockable bedside drawer or safe

    Maternity High Tea

The Mater Hospital serves the signature Maternity High Tea twice weekly, every Monday and Friday afternoon from 3.00pm to 4.00pm. This is a wonderful time for your family and friends to come together to celebrate the arrival of your baby. You will all be able to relax in the Maternity Patient Lounge while you enjoy a range of both sweet and savoury finger food, scones with jam and cream, fresh fruit along with tea and coffee. Soak up the views of the Blue Mountains and Lane Cove River as you share this special time.

    Luxury Family Suites

In some cases, you may be able to stay in one of the Mater Hospital’s Family Suites together with your partner and baby so that you can share those first few days together as a family. Having your own room, with a double bed, will help you to create your routine together more readily with your new baby while you are still in the hospital. There is a cost to request a Family Suite that is not covered by private health insurance, however, the cost does include all meals for you and your partner.
